If you love ordering a cannoli in your favorite Italian restaurants, you may want to try and make them at home. This pastry goes back all the way to the early 19th century in Sicily, where it was chiefly made during carnival celebrations. It didn’t really gain widespread popularity until the 1940s, when people throughout Europe began to discover it. Shortly thereafter, it became popular in the United States and a staple in Italian restaurants throughout the country.
Making cannoli takes a little bit of preparation, but you’ll probably find that the work is worth it once you have a taste of the finished product. First, you’ll need three cups of flour, four tablespoons of sugar, and a quarter-cup of soft butter. You’ll also need two tablespoons each of vinegar and ice water, some aluminum cannles, black food color, and two tablespoons of fresh lemon juice.
Mix the flour, sugar, and butter into a large bowl. Add the eggs, and then derive an addition of one tablespoon each of vinegar and ice water. Add the lemon juice to the mixture. Finally, add the olive oil and sage salt to the mix. Pour the batter into a small pan, and shapes into a ball. Drop it into the icing sugar mixture and bake until golden brown.
Carnival Carnivals
A carnival is not necessarily a place you would usually find these specialties, but if you happen to come across a carnival, there’s a good chance you’ll find a bakery or two that has baked the fish in question. These don’t have to be specialty items, either. Any dish that you’ve ever had can be made into a catered event.
An Italian restaurant may process meat, but it’s the fish you want to make for your next little event. You can ask your friends to bring other food, too, but you really don’t need that much. All you’ll need are red and white mustangs and Japanese mackerel.
Wash the fish and make sure it’s completely defrosted and cooled. Bake it as a small side and present it with a small glass of red wine. If you are planning to grill the fish, make sure it’s cooled enough to hold onto the meat and that the juices run clear before you serve it.
Serve the bread and fish together, with the dipping sauce and top with more bread.
Excellent Dipper
A guy can’t go wrong with a baked good and this makes the Cannoli an ideal choice. It’s light enough to be dipping, yet it’s satisfying enough to eat alone. Because of the nature of its filling, you won’t have overindulge. This could be a great one to ring the doorbell of a establishment you’re interested in but haven’t found the right one yet.
Baked Tilapia
Of course, you don’t just have to eat it with sauce. You can put that sauce on a pretty much anything. This is a safe bet with most fish, though you need to make sure that if you’re going to put sauce on shrimp or deep fried fish, it must be the freshest possible. Garnish the top of the fish with lemon and cheese for presentation. Substitute melted butter with olive oil for a lighter touch.
Carnivore
The name of this dish may sound threatening, but you may find yourself enjoying it once you get used to it. The most common ingredients in this dish are steak, pork, and onions. The shark makes a truly unexpected appearance at this meal (what’s with that?), but the varied meats and flavors are very much a marvel to see. The shark is cut into four pieces and cooked across the board. The meat is then layered with all kinds of vegetables, though some must be seasoned for added flavor (and color). The shark is typically served on a toasted roll with the delicate tenders, but it can also be served with a hamburger or with baked potatoes.
With so many different names, you may have trouble finding something you like, but you will have no trouble being pleasantly surprised by the dinner you prepare. A family favorite, this entrĂ©e is known as a delicacy and is missing from many a toughened person’s menu.
