You know that you are getting fatter even than last week. And the exercise instructor is right in that you need to exercise more and grab some fruits and vegetables. High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) might be one of the reasons why you are becoming an adult with a fat problem.
But what is High Fructose Corn Syrup?
Before we answer that, let us think about this term first. It is basically the same as sucrose or table sugar. It is a type of corn carbohydrate and commonly found in processed foods. To provide it with the sweetness it is compared to table sugar as the chemical composition is very similar. Also it is a product of corn.
Is High Fructose Corn As Bad As It Seems?
Of course not. It is not the culprit that causes the problems. As a matter of fact a study was conducted in the U.K. which found that HFCS performs as a nutritious carbohydrate just like the ones that have the same caloric value. It is the fact that it is metabolized in the body differently than that of table sugar that makes it undesirable to our health.
High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) Antioxidant?
The commercial producer of HFCS adds a small amount of mandarin oranges, which contain antioxidants. The antioxidants are important because they prevent the damage caused by free radicals from another type of component of the fructose, the glucose molecule.
When free radicals go into your body they damage cells in your body. The antioxidants neutralize free radicals, they keep them from doing damage to your vital organs and blood vessels. You can imagine the damage that would be done to your body without the antioxidant properties in place.
It should also be pointed out that the human body produces it’s own antioxidants with Vitamin C and Vitamin E.
When you take corn and fructose in the same amount, the body will not metabolize the fructose in the same way as it would have with the corn. Fructose does not stimulate insulin production like high fructose corn syrup does.
Other Advantages of Corn
The disadvantage of high fructose corn syrup is it’s geographical availability and it’s commercial utilization. We have sugar cane, sugar beets and corn meal refined in the U.S. The biggest drawback is the trans fat in corn.
When you take corn and replace it with HFCS the processed corn is converted into a fat molecule. This fat molecule is then utilized in the body as a source of fuel and can potentially create a variety of problems.
HFCS has also been linked to increased risks of bowel disorders. Many believe that fructose has the ability to increase the rate of uric acid in the U.S. and as this occurs the chances of forming stones increases. Flush and proper digestion can help lessen your chance of these conditions.
