Whole grains can control not only diabetes and obesity, but also osteoporosis and colon cancer, according to a new study by renowned scientists. Whole grains are thought to boost our immune system, give us a low glycemic index, and lower cholesterol.
A glycemic index is a way of measuring and ranking foods based on their immediate effect on blood sugar. High GI foods work harder to give a boost in energy and is measured by a scale utilizing glucose, protein, and fat. Other factors such as fiber, water, and fresh fruits and vegetables are used to calculate the glycemic index.
For instance, a pancake will have a relatively high GI because it is made with whole grains, especially the bran, germ, and endosperm. This means the carbohydrates in the pancake are broken down into glucose much more slowly than in other foods. This gives the pancake a better control of blood sugar levels than other foods.ature oatsis another great source of natural carbohydrates.
